Make Home Yours This Christmas
Caribbean people are some of the most colourful. From our colourful personalities to our fashion sense right down to the dishes we serve meals on and the mugs we drink tea and coffee in. Caribbean people have a way of commanding attention with our keen eye for detail, flair and character.
Understanding this collective Caribbean psychology, it should then come as no surprise that our most frequented spaces ie our homes naturally follow suit. Our homes are where we are our truest selves. Studies have shown a direct correlation between our environment and the impact it plays on our mood so, for the purposes of this blog, we’ve decided to show how you can set an objective to ‘boost your mood’ with inspiring seasonal home decor. Together let’s Make Home yours.
Staging your home is essentially styling your home with an intentional end goal. It’s often used when trying to get the attention of new tenants or buyers but in this case we’re staging it for ourselves: our 2024 end of year reset - the new uplifted, decluttered versions of ourselves that will end this year and begin the next. There’s no better time than this festive season to set the mood and lift spirits for yourself, your family and your future visitors. Imagine the next person standing at the door feeling an instant boost from the first knock or turnkey?
If the idea of creating this experience intrigues you, please read on and explore the possibilities…
Let’s begin at the beginning.
Setting the Theme
Often overlooked, choosing a theme is a great guide and the more original you get, the more fun it can be, especially if you get the family involved. A theme can be based on colours -take for example, white and gold or a modern twist incorporating a neon green accent colour. Another way you can approach a theme is by place. Here are some ideas to start you off: Santa’s Workshop, North Pole, Frosty’s Duplex, Bollywood Christmas, Rudolph’s Rum Shop… the best part is that there’s no rule. When it comes to the theme, your options are wide open. Once the theme is set, consider ways you can carry it out throughout your space and ‘deck the halls’ with it…literally.
Now it’s time to make our grand entry and knock on the door.
The Front Door
First impressions begin with curb appeal. Not everyone may have a curb to landscape, we all have a door. Start with a wreath, size and detail depend on your budget and if it’s your first, chances are you’ll also need a hanger to mount it on. Maybe you already have a wreath, but you want a new one, we have an affordable assortment in store to choose from. As for your old faithful wreath, find a new space to reuse it. Sometimes, placing an already loved item in a different room or new corner generates an aesthetically pleasing feeling of satisfaction.
We can’t enter the house until we’ve wiped our shoes on the front mat.
You may want to consider a new one that reflects your theme.
The Foyer
You’ve made it past the front door and you’re in the “hallway”, foyer or corridor depending on the layout of your place. Here tends to be an area where clutter seems to enjoy gathering so the first thing you want to do is practically declutter it. If there’s a lot of footwear here, you may want to invest in a shoe rack or storage bench. Whether it’s your sneakers, umbrellas, or hats the foyer area, once cleared opens to become a space that frames your living and dining room. A window of opportunity! Will it be lights? Seasonal art from family members? Or hanging wall decor? There’s no wrong answer once you achieve the festive facelift.
There are several new ornaments and accessories we have online and in store for the season that could inspire you. You may also realise what you need is more creative storage solutions. Come in and take a look. If you’re already starting to get ideas, stay tuned for part two where we explore more festive mood boosters for the Kitchen, Living and Dining Room.
